I did it last night.
It was harder work than I thought. I started, thinking "Oh, this is easy!" and then about 30 seconds through the first run, I thought "... how long is 60 seconds anyway"
During the run, my left knee twinged but not badly and I had some shin pain/tightness in my calves. It went away after the first couple of minutes. My walk gradually got slower and slower. I'm going to have to watch that, and also I briefly stopped during a run because I lost my iPod and instinctively started walking afterwards. I made it up by extending the time of my run, but again, something I'll have to watch.
I stretched well afterwards. Today I am not really sore--my hamstrings are a little tight and I'm a bit worried about the left one, which has been injured before. I'll stretch well tonight and tomorrow morning.
I do have a teensy bit of heel pain. I'm worried about the return of plantar fasciitis, so I'm going to pre-emptively take anti-inflammatories. Luckily I still have them from the last bout.
It's hard to run in the heat, but I think I can do it. I'm really hopeful.
Happy new year!

Hello everyone. I'm new to C25K and someone in another community suggested this group. :)
Today was my first day. Because it's so cold out I went to the gym and used the treadmill. Usually I do weight training but I've been wanting to seriously add cardio to my workouts. I just have no stamina. On Monday I decided that instead of just trying to run I would start with walking and did a brisk walk for 20 min.
This morning I learned about C25K and really wanted to try it. Because I over-worked my muscles on Monday I decided not to do weights today. So I decided to start this program today (was going to start it on Monday).
I was able to do the whole 20 minutes with jogging for 60 sec and walking fast for 90 sec intervals (with 5 min warmup and 3 min cool down). The speed I did on the treadmill was 2.0 for the first 2 min of the warmup and then 3.0 for the other 3 min. From then on I did 3.7 for walking and 4.5 for jogging. It felt like a good pace for me.
Usually after my workouts I feel pretty good. Today, after the treadmill, I felt GREAT! I have never felt so good after working out (cardio or weights). I feel, for the first time in my life, that one day being able to run 5k is an obtainable goal!
I have one question though. For those of you who also do weight training... Do you suggest doing this program on the same days or alternate days? I've always been told that some sort of cardio is best after using weights. I just don't know if it would be too much (I'm not in great shape. Getting there though!).

I certainly wish I'd found this group when I first started training for my 5k 3 weeks ago. Anyway, I'm one race in, but hope to do another race the beginning of next year. A co-worker and I are running partners. We're hoping to shave time off our first race.
I dig cold air running. I love it. I don't know why. I actual fear the heat because I hate heat.
I also have a deathly fear of treadmills. I don't know if it comes from seeing too many America's Funniest Videos that end with a person careening of the edge of a treadmill only to hit their head on the coffee table or tackle the dog or if it's some weird fear that robots will take over one day and they'll know how fast and long we can run because we've programed our running stats into their little digital interfaces.
One thing I need to work on is hill running. The 5k I did had a monster hill so any tips are appreciated.

Just started on the program, and I was excited to get out there this morning. It was a little harder than I expected, but that seemed mostly due to the dry, 30F air I was breathing in. It was fine at first, but as I continued, my lungs started to feel very unhappy. By the time I was done, my airways felt seriously narrowed and it took me nearly 15 minutes to be able to take a full lungful of air after cooling down and coming back in the house.
Anyone else running in cold air and have tips for avoiding this next time? I'm thinking of wrapping a scarf around my nose and mouth next time, some articles I read suggested this as a way of trapping water molecules and keeping the air I'm breathing warmer.
Other than the breathing issue, this morning was great! LOL I was tired, but excited to be underway. And doing the first workout proved to me that I am capable of going forward--not something I seriously doubted, but it was reassuring to realise I didn't die. :D

Oh hey, I forgot to put a race report here.
( Race report! )
As for post-5k, I'm continuing with Podrunner and doing their Gateway to 8k program. I just don't want to be too ambitious, because that would be bad. However, I cherish goals of going up to Mackinac either in June or September (hopefully September for the 8-mile!)

So, every part of my body hurt today before I went for my run, including the spot that I had surgery at in October..which is random, but expected. I went to run outside with friends and let them know that I was going to shorten my run..from the typical 30 minutes. I was hoping to make it 20 minutes...but anticipated only 15 minutes. Well...running the snow covered paths, starting out barely faster than a walk...I went further...further than I usually go... So weird, why do I have runs like this? When I'm feeling the worst, I run the best. The last 6 runs that I've had have been 30 minutes. I ran for 35 minutes today...in the snow. Twice, I stopped to walk...and walked for less than 30 seconds before I said to myself....you're not a walker, you're a runner....get those legs moving again. It's important to listen to your body, but it's also important to listen to your heart and your brain...not only do they get us through difficult runs...but they also get us through the difficulties in life. Everytime I think of stopping...I think back to the first few weeks of this program..when I wanted nothing more than to be a runner, and how painful it was to run for 1 minute straight...this gets me running again.... I can't stop to walk anymore, that's not me, that was someone else. I feel so good today!

As you can see it's early days for me and I am looking for a piece of advice. I have found that I keep running at the very front end of the treadmill, which means that I am actually scuffing the casing over the tread at the front. My treadmill also has a safety plug in the lower centre of the console and I am reguarly knocking it out with my hand as I am running because I tend to get so close. The speed of the interval that I am running does not seem to make a difference.
Has this been an issue for anyone else and is there something anyone can suggest. At the moment I have wrapped a ribbon over the handles about a half foot away from the console to try to keep me further back. The machine is definately long enough for me (142 cm X 51 cm running mat) But I still seem to keep running right to the front to of the machine.

Hi everyone, I've just completed my first week of the program and so far I am loving it. Hopefully I will be able to keep up with it as I have just confirmed my entry into my first 5K run in the new year (early March)and I am determined to do it! To be fit enough to do this would be a big accomplishment in my life (I've been fit before, but didn't do any running).
Like most newbies I've been reading peoples posts here, which were part of the inspiration to look into and try this program. So thanks in advance and looking forward to your input and assistance as I learn to run for fun.

I just finished running the last day of the program - 3 miles. I am feeling quite pleased with myself, but I also know it would have been much harder without the support, companionship and encouragement of the folks in this group, especially
americanbeauty so THANK YOU ALL!!!! As someone pointed out, this is just the beginning.... Michele
